There are interesting and surprising facts about sperm cells you might not know.
1. Sperm cells were discovered back in the 17th century!🔬
Sperm cells were discovered and described for the first time by the Dutch microbiologist Anthony van Leeuwenhoek back in 1677. He described them as tiny “animalcules” with a blunt head and a long, nearly transparent tail.
2. Sperm cells are tiny indeed. 🧫
The sperm cell is considered the smallest cell in the human body. Its total length is only 55 µm. Scientists need a microscope with 400x magnification to see a sperm cell. In contrast, the female egg cell is one of the biggest cells in the human body. Opposites attract!
3. Mitochondria play a big role not only in egg cells but also in spermatozoa.🧬
Mitochondria are central to the metabolism of spermatozoa. The principal role of mitochondria is to provide energy. Spermatozoa use ATP, released by the mitochondria, not only for motility but also for capacitation and oocyte penetration.🤓
4. Sperm can live for up to 5 days inside a woman’s body. 🌝
However, in hot water, they die within a few seconds.
5. The average ejaculate contains 100-200 million sperm. And as we know, only one sperm cell can fertilize one egg. What a competition!🏎

It is allowed only for heterosexual officially married couples unable to achieve pregnancy naturally.
The Intended Parents are protected by the legislation: if a couple is officially married and if one of a couple is genetically related to a baby the couple is considered to be the biological parents. According to Ukrainian legislation, a surrogate mother can’t claim any rights as to the baby, and only you as a mother and a father will be indicated in the child’s birth certificate.
🔷Where do surrogate mothers undergo screenings and where do they give birth?
Surrogate mothers undergo screenings and check-ups at Biotexcom during the whole pregnancy. Once they reach 30-34 weeks of pregnancy, surrogates have to arrive in Kyiv for further surveillance. They are giving birth in our partner maternity hospitals in the capital of Ukraine.
🔷Who will be registered as the child’s parents? Will the surrogate be indicated in the birth certificate?
Once you pass the DNA test and it states your genetic link with a baby, you will be registered as official parents. A surrogate mother isn’t indicated in the birth certificate.
🔷How long will the surrogacy process take?
The answer depends on the type of package (its waiting time of matching a couple with a SM) and the number of attempts needed. 1 attempt usually takes 1 month of stimulation, 9 months of pregnancy, and 1-2 months of completing the paperwork. Add the waiting time (12-4 months) and this will be an approximate answer.
🔷 What’s the success rate for surrogacy?
The success rate may vary depending on the quality of eggs used. If the donor eggs are used, success rate may reach up to 80%. Anyway, majority of Biotexcom packages are unlimited, so a baby is guaranteed.
🔷 How many visits will I have to make to Ukraine?
At least two: the first one for the initial consultation and sperm collection and the second one for taking a baby home. Of course, the number may depends on your treatment protocol.
